I clearly remember this title and some parts of this story... but I pictured it in colour in my memory! So is there a more recent adaptation or is there a book with colour pictures or drawings?

There was an episode of "Disney's Wonderful World of Colour" broadcast in 1977 called 'El Blanco' about a wild white stallion. I can't find it on imdb, but google it and you might.
