Edith Bunker

Lola reminds me of Edith Bunker.

I thought the same thing during her scene with the mailman.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

Ditto

More precisely, Edith Bunker reminds me of Lola, especially in their funny way of walking, sort of a scurry. But the big difference is that Edith is almost always the sunny optimist, while Lola seems to be clinically depressed. Edith enjoys her memories, but isn't stuck in the past. It would be interesting to know if Jean Stapleton consciously borrowed some of the characteristics.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

So I'm not the only one!

Jean has Shirley's walk, for sure. "Scurry" is a good word for it. And the same direct way of looking closely at people she's talking to, giving them her full attention.

'while Lola seems to be clinically depressed'

what we saw was not clinial depresson,or even mild depression. That's the problem: you would think Lola would be depressed, but she's not. Doc is.
Do you know what clinical depression is?

Edith Bunker
Lola had a more deliberate way of speaking, and was more intelligent than might appear.

Lola was a very sad and lonely person who tried her best to be optimistic. Edith was always optimistic. Lola had more substance than Edith.

reply

Though she did remind me of Edith bunker, for some reason Lola also reminded me a lot of Thelma Ritter.
