That is so sad. Maybe with Carrie's help he could have got a new job. Carrie didn't a have a new partner did she? So so sad. One of the saddest endings I've seen.

From the plot synopsises I've read, the second half of the film is apparently different than in the book, but in terms of the movie, it might also be that George doesn't want to hold Carrie back. Earlier, he mentioned something about her youth and how she should make the most out of life (didn't he?), and I think that came up for him in the end, too. He simply didn't believe in himself any more, and thought he would hurt her career?

I mean all this in addition to his pride, which was a factor, too.

If you love someone very deeply, but at some point you know you have to let them go in order for them to flourish and have a better life, then you are doing what's best for them, as tough as it is.

No. Not Pride. Shame. Here is a once well-to-odo man who’d have taken pride in providing the finest for his wife. Now reduced to the lowest of circumstances, he must suffer that wife offering to feed & shelter him out of pity. That was the final blow. He’s ashamed before her and of himself. Accepting her charity would’ve been unbearable.
