Available on DVD but...

Facets under its "Cinemateca" label released this wonderful little jewel from Luis Buñuel. "El bruto" is a quite well known movie in México in particular, and in Latin America in general. But remains practically unknown in the rest of the world.

These are the good news: Finally a DVD with english subtitles is available for the modest price of 22 bucks in amazon.

The bad news is that the transfer is poor, the audio is discernible but there are hiss and pops here and there during the whole movie.
"El Bruto" needs badly a complete restoration.
Although Facets DVD is not unwatchable, it doesn't makes justice to this great movie from one of the best directors ever. Albeit perhaps we should be thankful because at least is available on DVD

Anyway if you want to be thankful withtout paying 22 bucks, just stick to the mexican release (region 0 aka "region free") that costs only about 9 dollars. This version released by "Optima" looks identical to me than the "Cinemateca" release. The only difference is that the latter includes english subs, while the mexican DVD is san-subtitles.

Therefore if you can understand spanish save those 13 bucks and buy the cheapest version, there is no reason to buy the overpriced Cinemateca release.

If you don't speak spanish, then Facets (Cienemateca) DVD is ur only choice.

"El bruto" is a wonderful but underrated movie by Buñuel that boasts excellent performances by Pedro Armendáriz, Katy Jurado, Andrés Soler and Rosita Arenas.

A must own for any fan of Buñuel and good cinema.

I bought the Mexican edition of the DVD (Region 1 and 4), and I'm afraid that the print quality is not the best, either. Firstly, thinking that it would be much better, I was tempted to buy the more expensive Cinemateca DVD you described above, but now that I've read your comments I'm glad that I didn't.

I agree that this great movie deserves a full restoration of both image and sound.
