Bad journey planning!

This is one of my favourite films, but one thing that always rankles with me is Tony Garthwaite's flight to Cairo. He says he is delivering a Vampire "for de Havillands". He takes his wife with him but admits when getting there that he didn't think about how they were going to get back! When it is suggested that they hitch a lift on the de Havilland Comet he says no, rival company. But he delivered the Vampire for de Havillands! This sequence just makes Tony seem a bit of a prat, even allowing for the fact that the plot requires him not to be the brightest pilot in the sky.
