Robert Newton ....

... THE best pirate to ever grace a film.

His scenes with Irene Ryan are hilarious to boot.

AAAAARrrrrrrr.

Yes sir, you are right about that.

Just watched BLACKBEARD THE PIRATE for the first time in about forty years and even though I remember it as a disappointing movie (I wanted to see the historical Maynard-Blackbeard mano a mano), I found it very entertaining as an adult, largely because of Newton. He was very funny, especially in the gleefully amoral way he would doublecross everyone, including his own crew.

Watching it now. It is a silly movie. And yet I continue to watch. Historically?...Well, that's not why I watch something like this. But now I know where "Arrrrrr" comes from. Robert Newton must have had an aching jaw from all the scenery he chewed. And then there's William Bendix, the first mate from Brooklyn. Linda Darnell was truly a babe and a half. And Keith Andes? Well, he fulfills his function.
Arrrr!!!!!

One of my favorite actors overall.
He is great in everything I've seen him in. Blackbeard is actually a lesser role, in my opinion, than many of his others.
Anyone who likes this and Long John Silver should check out movies like Oliver Twist, Odd Man Out, Obsession and Henry V.
