Was Lon Chaney too much of a drunk for lines

He is always playing mutes. Never seen it but it is coming soon to Svengoolie.

Lon Chaney was certainly articulate as Larry Talbot and the werewolf movies.

I think that if they gave non-speaking parts to all of the drunks and addicts in Hollywood, we would be watching a lot more silent movies.

I just do not get why he was hired by univerisal so many time to not have lines.
he was a good actor in the right roles.

To be fair he did have a lot of talking parts even after this stage in his career. This is not much of a part for him in this movie. It was his last for Universal so perhaps they just got this one out of the way for him to complete his contract.

If he was a heavy drinker I think it told in his features as he grew really grizzled as time went by. Not in his speech pattern as far as I have detected in his movies. Also because of his massive body bulk, he was ideal for mute brute parts as exampled in this one.
