Pearl Harbor

When they go to the USS Arizona, you get to see it before they did the memorial. It really brings to home they men who died on the ship. Even though the Arizona wasn’t still on the rolls, I liked the voice-over speech JW spoke over the footage. Also not all are entombed; they recovered just over three hundred before they decided to leave the rest within the ship. Two books are great on the subject:

Descent into Darkness: Pearl Harbor, 1941 - A Navy Diver's Memoir by Cdr. Edward C. Raymer USN (Ret.)

Resurrection: Salvaging the Battle Fleet at Pearl Harbor by Daniel Madsen

Both are very informative.

I wasn't aware of these books. Thanks for the info.

The Arizona was still carried on the active duty rolls of the Navy when this movie was made -- Wayne's narration during his scene at the memorial states this, accurately. I'm not sure about today (2014) but the last I ever heard, admittedly some years ago, the Arizona was still listed as an active ship of the line in the United States Navy.

The USS Arizona was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in December of 1942. On March 7, 1950, the Arizona was symbolically "re-commissioned" when a flagpole was erected on the ship. The USS Arizona is treated as one of the current fleet, and the flag flying on the ship's mast only flies at half-staff when the other ships fly their flags at half-staff.

Thanks for the info...and more than two years later, yet.

Believe it or not, I was just notified on October 28, 2016 that someone had replied to this thread. I guess they are a little slow.

Yes, once in a great while I also get a notification that's many months or more old. Lost in the ether, I suppose. But your case may be a record!

Thanks again for the update, though. Frankly I'd forgotten all about the subject, and it's nice to learn the facts.

Thanks for the reading recommendations.

I watched recently, a pretty good Movie about a Bomber flying to Hawaii, when arriving they find out Pearl Harbor is under attack.
