WHAT DOES TITLE MEAN?
I figured it must be a play on the expression 'bells on their toes' but changed to 'belles' meaning youn ladies on their toes - alert and ready to take on life.
shareIt comes from the phrase "rings on their fingers and bells on their toes". In the book one of the brothers says if the girls want to get a ring on their finger they're going to have to have bells on their toes. I think the brother meant they needed a way to attract attention, be a little different from others.
