DVD coming 8/30/11

The Atomic City will be released on DVD on August 30, 2011. The movie is being issued by Olive Films, which for the past year has been mining the Paramount library for unreleased films from that studio.

Retail price is Olive's usual $24.99, though of course most outlets will have it for less. Judging from Olive's past Paramount releases, the quality of the disc should be excellent, though the DVD will likely have no extras except for scene selection. Although Olive has begun to issue a couple of their Paramount releases on Blu-ray, thus far TAC is slated for standard DVD release only.

This seldom-seen film is a modest but solid thriller, well acted and directed, and benefits from having been shot on location in Los Alamos, NM (the "atomic city" of the title). Its only previous home video release was as a sub-par EP/SLP VHS from Paramount in the early 90s. Olive Films has just started to issue Paramount pictures beyond the original batch of 27 they leased last year. The Atomic City is the second such "new" title now scheduled, so it's to be hoped the company will continue to acquire the DVD rights for more neglected titles from one of Hollywood's great studios.
