Fun to Watch

I finally watched this film this past weekend on TV. I enjoyed it. The plot was silly but some of the songs were great. As usual, Miss Day is a pleasure to watch. The color was good but the film needed to be digitally restored.I saw lots of dirt on the film. I planned to shut the film off several times but I was unable. While it's no memorable classic, it was worth my time to see Day and Bolger.

I like this picture... but I do not believe there was much chemistry between Doris Day and Ray Bolger. They are both great performers. But who's idea was to team them up? otherwise I enjoyed this film.

reply

You're right. It is a very likable film because both Doris Day and Ray Bolger are such pros but they have no chemistry as a couple. I often wonder how they sold that idea when they were casting this movie.

Yeah. Ray Bolger wasn't really the leading man type, but he was always enjoyable to watch dance. Of course, anything he did after Oz, you look at his other work & think the scarecrow.

This was a fun movie hearkening back to times long gone. I hadn't seen a Doris Day film in quite a while and was reminded what an awesome performer she is. No matter what was going on in her personal life or if she was exhausted from a grueling work schedule, she seemed to give her all. It was also enjoyable watching Ray Bolger in his dance sequences. He was Good! There was some harping about him not being attractive enough, etc., but if you think about the fact that Ms. Day was playing more of a "woman of the people" type who was mistakenly sent on the trip, it all works. And the last part of the movie really seemed to capture a great "movie" version of Paris. I remember walking around those dark ancient streets and freezing my butt off sitting at a sidewalk cafe drinking a kir one spring. It gets cold there at night! And Christmastime is even colder!!!

Despite my agreement with others regarding the questionable chemistry between the leads, April in Paris was still enjoyable. Great songs along with Doris Day's performance.

The teaming of Bolger & Day reminds me of the odd casting of Clifton Webb as a romantic lead for Gene Tierney in 'Laura'(1944), Barbara Stanwyck in 'Titanic (1953), and Dorothy McGuire in 'Three Coins in the Fountain' (1944). Completely unbelievable. Still they're 10x better as a couple than Day & Richard Widmark in 'The Tunnel of Love' (1958).
