In the first half of the movie (spoilers herein)

I'm italian and I saw a dubbed version of the movie and maybe it was somewhat uncorrect. I didn't understand what was actually Diane suspected of by Frank in their first confrontation, when she comes to his room claiming her stepmother tried to kill her. Frank tells Diane he doesn't believe her but I'm unsure if he suspects her for the initial gas escape at the beginning or not... Someone please tell me...

yes, he suspected her of trying to kill her mother-in-law.

Just in case the previous answer confuses more than explains, the victim of the gas leak was her step-mother, of whom she is insanely jealous. Interesting movie, the last of the film noirs.

Yes, Diane certainly tried to kill the stepmother at the beginning of the movie. She was at the piano while the paramedics were there. She was also at the piano when the car went over the cliff. I believe her original motive for following Frank to Harry`s bar the first night was to recruit an accomplice.

I agree with this but certainly you concede the point that she falls desperately in love with him after a time?

reply

I don't think anyone in her mental state really understands about love in the true sense of the word, I think she had more of an obsession with him.

I think that Diane falls in love with Frank (or at least her idea of him). This is especially true after her father dies. Frank is a bit of a replacement for Diane's father. She needs a man around who's love she can obsess over.

Yes, I agree. To the extent Diane can truly love someone, she loves Frank. It is a strange love to most other people but for her love is all consuming. In the same way she wanted her father all to herself, imaging things they could do together alone, she envisions being with Joe. He would be her everything.

As she says, she never even considered the fact her father loved her stepmother and vice versa. Theirs was a different kind of love than one would have for a child or a child for a parent. Part of her problem is she lost her mother at a young age and may not have gotten a chance to experience her parents relationship independent of their relationship with her.

Her father may have doted on her for a while because of their mutual loss. All they had was each other and he probably wanted to make sure his daughter was protected and knew he was there for her. At some point he sought out adult companionship, found love and married; maybe without properly preparing his daughter for how that would affect her life. Instead of seeing Catherine as a potential mother figure or close friend in her life, she thought of her as a rival who had come in and driven a wedge between her and her father.

I believe Frank suspected there was something strange about the gas leak from the start.
