Is there a DVD out now of this classic?

This is one of my fondest childhood memories, when I saw this on TV in the late 1950s as a boy. A delightful movie, even though the subject matter was intensely dramatic, like DeMille's SIGN OF THE CROSS (1932) or MGM's QVO VADIS (1951) about Christians suffering under the persecution of the Romans in ancient Rome. George Bernard Shaw's play was given a great turn by the director in this marvelous film adaptation. The one and only thing I found wrong with this movie is that it was not made in Technicolor. Like MGM's JULIUS CAESAR (1953), this movie literally cries out for color, yet has none. All that wonderful production design and art direction, and costumes, reduced to the basic black & white of the TV's little 1950s screen, like RKO's LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (1935).

I love this movie! Alan Young is a delight as Androcles, Jean Simmons is her sweet beautiful self, and comic support from Jim Backus and Robert Newton give it a good shot, while the stately British Shakespearean actors Alan Mowbray, Reginald Gardiner, Noel Willman and Maurice Evans are well-represented here in fine roles as Romans.

Does anyone know if this movie is available on DVD yet? I hope it will be soon.

Thank you for reminding me of her! I edited my comment to include her.
I got a VHS videotape of this movie at the public library several years ago,
but haven't seen it since.

Criterion has announced the U.S. DVD release for February 23, 2010, as part of a three-film box set of Shaw's films. Details and artwork for the set can be found at classicflix.com.
