He left for Italy in 1969, frustrated with the lack of meaty roles as an African-American. Strode lived in Italy for five years and made 12 films there. "Race is not a factor in the world market," he said in a 1982 interview with the Globe and Mail. "I once played a part written for an Irish prize fighter. I've done everything but play an Anglo-Saxon. I'd do that if I could. I'd play a Viking with blue contact lenses and a blond wig if I could."
