pure political propaganda

that's it!

Ya think?.. Really??.. What clued you in?..
What were you expecting, Oliver Stone?

reply

It's fine with me. Miserable movies are made like weed. I just wonder why I had to be the first to spell it out.

reply

again,The only way I can respond to this incredibly stupid post is that because of Col.Tibbets, I, my 2 brothers, our children and grandchildren all exist in this world. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. They brought us into the war. They would not give up. President Truman knew a full scale invasion of Japan would cost thousands of American and Jappenese Lives. The war could have gone on till 1948 with my Father never coming home in 1946. I see nothing but a film that shows Americans the true story that ended world war 2. If you bothered to listen to Robert Osborne on TCM, you would have found out this movie was far from propaganda, it was made to let the American people in on the story of the biggest secret of WW 2: Operation Silverplate. Thank the lord we got it first and not the Nazi's.

reply

Seems like the propaganda had its effect on you. The war to go on till 1948? Yeah, right.
Not only that, but the nazi's would've never gotten the A-bomb; another fine piece of American paranoia. First of all, Hitler didn't believe in science and had stopped all research into atomic weapons pretty quickly. Another reason was that most of the great german scientists ... were jews. And most of them were either dead, or had fled the country. Ironic: there were actually some fugitives from Germany that helped make the A-bomb for America.
So "thank the lord"? Stuff it.

But it did happen

reply

You response was that of a HUGE JERK faceless poster. A person says Thank God and your response it to tell them to stuff it. What does that say about you?

It is a fact that up to million could die (more Japanese than American)if the US had to land on Japan proper. More so, there was no reason to believe Japan would surrender. Imagine US soldiers fighting woman and children??? Consider the slaughter the Red Army would have yielded.

Further more it is very real to see that the war could continue 2 more years (1948 seems a little high but whatever)

Furthermore, we had no idea where Hilter's Nuclear program when Germany surrendered. It was very plausible that they too where on the brink. Consider the strides they had made with rocketry.

I am a very liberal person and yet I can totally understand why Truman chose the bomb. Simply put America wanted out immediately. More so the country could not afford any more war ... after 4 years the debt was in the trillions.

reply

Did this @#$%! moron even watch the movie? I can't recall one scene in which Robert Taylor didn't act like the weight of the world was on his shoulders, or was frightened for the future of mankind - maybe because, ah, all that stuff was true. The night before the flight, Tibbets is thinking about what he's about to do and how he could explain it to his mother:

I think mostly I'm scared for my sons, and for their world. I'm scared of what can happen if this thing we're unleashing tomorrow doesn't stop this war, and all others. I'm feel bad now, Ma. But I'll be alright.

Nothing out of line there from the real man. Pure propaganda doesn't question itself for two straight hours.

God bless Paul Tibbets.

reply

That's exactly what pure propaganda does: Faking a doubt that never was there. Makes it only worse.

reply

I would suggest you take your Nazi ass and goose step to the nearest public library. Maybe you could learn something.

reply

If you oppose to using the A-bomb, some simpleminded people think of you as a Nazi. Like Bush saying if you oppose the war in Iraq you support Saddam Hussein.

Apart from that, which I can live with, since I have gotten used to it, please explain the movie's artistic justification to me. In terms of ART, you know aestethics, visuals, narration. Documentaries are not art, not yet at least.

reply

Documentaries certainly can be art.

This movie? No, not at all. All that moaning over the toll taken on Tibbets' home life? Tell it to the Japanese who are still suffering from radiation even today.

One country's hero is another country's war criminal.

reply

The Japanese?!, OMG, how about the victims of the Terrorist attack on Pearl Harbor, that killed many servicemen and civilians without warning, no war with them at the time, ready to invade the U.S., They were the criminals!

reply

Guess what! It WAS USED and the vast majority of Americans do and always WILL approve! So, GET OVER IT SHIRLEY!!

reply

Like Bush saying if you oppose the war in Iraq you support Saddam Hussein.

Uh, Bush never said that or anything like it regarding the war in Iraq. He did say that OTHER COUNTRIES were either with us or with the terrorists after 9/11. Even that was never directed at domestic critics of the War on Terror. It's a liberal fiction that they were called "un-patriotic".

reply

Well, I am not US. So it applied directly to my country.

And it was said launching the war on terror. I agree it was not directly adressing Iraq that came a few years later.

If you oppose to using the A-bomb and act like an a**hat about it, normal people think of you as a Nazi. Fixed.

reply

The ignorance here is APPALLING!!! See the documentary "X Day, The Invasion of Japan" and THEN come whining about the bomb like a little girl. The estimated casualties for an invasion were ONE MILLION at least! That's Japanese and American! Firebombing of Tokyo killed more than either bomb did. Get someone to teach you to READ for God's sake!

reply

estiamted by ..... the bomb thrower himself to justify his act.

Are you one these asses who always "Blame America First"?

reply

You are pretty Foolish to argue this point. All serious historical analysis is against you.

reply

What reason would they have had to push this as political propaganda in 1952? Some movies made during WWII were propaganda to build morale, but this was made 7 years after the war.

reply

There is absolute evidence that Hirohito wanted to continue the war until the atomic bombs. If the allies were compelled to invade, there would be a million casualties before it was over. The Japanese brought it on themselves - in the US and China and other of our allies. I think Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker were terrific in this film.

reply

Yeah, what might those reasons be ...
