Funny; Has its Moments

This is not a great A&C movie by any means, but it does have some funny moments. Seeing Charles Laughton playing it straight in a A&C film was pretty funny in its own right. The interplay between Laughton and Costello is classic and I can just see the comedic actor cracking up the serious one between takes.

A&C are waiters, Rocky and Puddin, in a dive in Tortuga who inadvertently wind up with Captain Kidd's treasure map. They are tricked into getting on board Kidd's boat and head to Skull Island to retrieve the booty. Anne Bonney is another historical pirate who helps the pair (even though she was not a contemporary of Kidd's. Oh well, its not a documentary). The scenes of Costello's Puddin imitating Laughton as Kidd are pretty good as is the scene of Puddin painting a mustache on what he thinks is a portrait of Kidd, but is actually Kidd himself. Lastly, the scene of Puddin getting drowned every time he opens one of the port windows while the other characters never have that problem is kind of a rite of these kinds of films.

There is the obligatory (and forgettable) love story which is one of the weakest of any A&C film, IMO. The plot is kind of silly, but the actors are game for it and that makes it worth a look.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
