Richard Crenna

Whoa, he's very handsome as a teenager, but what in the world is up with that voice?????

I agree! Are you watching the "OMB" marathon on the Decades channel? I'd forgotten how delightful this series was. Happy New Year!

He made that voice up for the show. I don't think he was a teenager think he was older but looked younger.

They couldn't make Crenna look young enough for the part so they had to make him sound young enough.

This is not entirely true because the voice goes back to radio.

Crenna (born 1926) was 26 years old when the TV series began in 1952, so he was not necessarily a teenager, but you're right -- he did create that voice for the radio show. It may have been funny for radio, but it wasn't necessary for the TV show. Fortunately, he toned it down a bit as the series progressed so it wasn't so grating to the ears.

Actually, the series premiered 10/03/52 and Crenna turned 26 on 11/30/52.

There's another extreme. Gloria McMillan who played Harriet Conklin was only twelve when she started voicing the high school character on radio in 1948. She was high school age when they went to TV.

He played a similar character, with the same voice, on I Love Lucy in 1952 - his first appearance on TV, it says on the episode's page. He was already playing Walter on the radio and was about to play him on TV, at Desilu. He played a teenager who had a crush on a girl who had a crush on Ricky. When Lucy tried to help him win the girl, he fell in love with Lucy!

When I started watching Our Miss Brooks, I looked up the I Love Lucy episode to see if the character was Walter - like a pre-crossover - but it's not. But viewers likely recognized Walter from the radio.
