Goodbye, all imdb.com message boards and PM capabilities

On 2/20/17 imdb is shutting down all message boards and PM capability. They are trying to get everyone to go to Facebook or Twitter. This really sucks.

They're supposedly giving loyal fans a couple of weeks to archive any posts they want to, but I'm not even sure how to do that easily. Any suggestions?

I suspect that Jeff Bezos and his henchmen decided they didn't want to pay for moderators any longer, and I guess they didn't want to consider using unpaid volunteers. Maybe the trolls and their endless vitriol finally won out. (If I didn't know better, I'd say Trump is behind this, since he seems to be behind every other piece-of-5h1t idea.)

As far as I know, there really is no practical alternative to imdb.com message boards, unless someone knows something I don't and can suggest something. I wonder if anyone can get a gofundme site going to build an alternative. Probably not; probably way too expensive/difficult.

Or maybe if they get enough complaints, they will continue the forums for a nominal subscription fee, which I'd probably be willing to pay.

And a boycott wherein folks refuse to click on any of the ads probably would also fail to bring the boards back, since probably not enough people would do it.

I've enjoyed most of the discussions here, even though things sometimes got heated. And I'll miss the information and exchange of ideas I got from this place. I doubt anything can really replace it.

1 star the app and uninstall it on Feb 20th. Cancel your prime membership.

I never had the app; I just go there in Google Chrome on my Win 10 computer. And canceling a Prime subscription would probably be like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face: it would probably hurt the customer more than Amazon.

A huge email deluge might have some effect, but I doubt enough people would get involved in that. I still think a large-scale boycott of their advertisers would be most noticeable to them: Just don't click on any ads on their site.

Yes, this does seem a bit like we've now been forever locked out of the country we've visited so often. But Big Biz rules, so there's really nothing we can do. And I think you're right: there is no decent alternative, unless someone with deep pockets creates one.

If users care enough, I suppose we may see individual free forums popping up around the Web for individual TV shows or films, but that would be pretty scattered and hard to find. I think it would be possible to set up a free phpBB for AoS somewhere such as here:
https://www.prophpbb.com/

But it would have to be done quickly, while we can all still communicate about it so everyone would know where it is. If others are interested in an AoS board, please speak up soon.

I have some experience setting up a phpBB. I think I could set up a free one if anyone is interested. I would moderate it only lightly--temporarily penalizing a troll only if I get a lot of complaints.

If this concept sounds interesting, please speak up soon, so I can put it up and let people know where it can be found before it's too late and we no longer can communicate here. Otherwise I'll assume there is not enough interest and I won't pursue it.

I've done some checking around, but I don't see any decent forums devoted to AoS only. I found some AoS-related posts scattered in other superhero/Superman forums, but nothing devoted solely to AoS. A bit frustrating.

However, for what it's worth, I did find some interesting YouTube videos, including the original Kellogg's opening, some original b&w episode previews and test footage of flying sequences. Here's the Kellogg's opening:

If you're on Facebook, join The Adventures Continue page. It's run by Jim Nolt, the most knowledgeable AOS fan of all. It's the only place to go for your George Reeves' Superman fix. The stuff posted there is non pareil.

As far as I can tell, Facebook is a lousy alternative to discussion forums. It's just one long string of random posts with a lot of junk posted in between. No easy-to-find and easy-to-follow discussion threads, etc.

I agree. Facebook is a terribly clumsy way to try to have a discussion. No threading, no "ignore" capability, etc. Plus all the irrelevant stuff and fake crap (Michael Douglas death hoax, etc.) interspersed.

I don't understand why folks on the imdb message boards couldn't just make liberal use of the "Ignore" option if they had a problem with negative posts, trolls, etc. I think that killing the boards was just a cost-cutting measure, and imdb is just using "bad behavior" as an excuse for getting rid of everything, just to save money.

I'm sad to see this go also, and have enjoyed reading it as well.

There is a no-cost quick solution if you are interested in doing this. You can create a Yahoo Group in several minutes, and people can subscribe to it. It is a mailing list and also has threads. It can be read from the website too. You can select to make it moderated or not. People only need to create a Yahoo account to use it:

https://groups.yahoo.com

Thanks, but I've investigated that option, and it does not seem optimal. First, there's already an Adventures of Superman group there, but they require that our email addresses be shown. And if I try to create another, similar group (but would not require email addresses to be shown), it will probably generate confusion and, perhaps, a complaint from the existing group.

The best option so far is for me to create a ProphpBB forum and not require email signup, but just allow admin to accept requests to join. This does leave the board somewhat more vulnerable to spam, but I think they have pretty good built-in spam filters there, and I'm more interested in preserving people's privacy/anonymity so it doesn't generate a lot of paranoia and scare folks away.

I'm hoping that if I go to the trouble to set up a board there, regulars from here will come on board and help get it going. It would be great if they would also use their indb.com board names so we could recognize each other.

In addition to your reply, I've received a few PMs in support of my idea. So I plan in the next few days to try to set up a board and will then post a message here inviting people to migrate over. I would plan not to require email addresses for signup, to ensure privacy/anonymity.

I would also plan to keep the board up long enough to see if there's any real interest and, hopefully, no problems with spam, etc. As I said, I would moderate it with a very light touch, just to keep trolls/spammers from ruining everything.

It will be a bit of work for me to do this, but I'm happy to give it a try. The only other option is to wait for a decent alternative to imdb.com to emerge, but that may take a while (or never). I've been tracking some discussion over at the classic film board here, and there's a lot of paranoia about alternatives because of a fear of phishing scams just trying to get email addys, etc.; or current trolls setting up a board just to cause mischief for others. I'm trying to avoid that paranoia by having everything anonymous. And, as I recall, ProphphBB does not allow tracking of IP addys, etc.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I think you make a lot of sense. I'd be willing to try it if you can get it set up in time. And, as was mentioned before, Facebook is a very poor alternative to an actual discussion forum. In addition, Jim Nolt wants people to use his Facebook page for The Adventures Continue partly as a way to hype his website, from which he makes advertising-link money. So he's somewhat self-serving.

Also, the Yahoo! option isn't great because of the confusion you mentioned with an existing group, as well as the need for folks to be a Yahoo! member, or else sign up there if they aren't.

If you're willing to set it up, I'll give it a try. Just let us know when it's ready and how to find it.

After exploring all the options, I've finally decided NOT to go forward with creating a standalone AoS board. I don't want to pay for hosting, and the free options all involve having to submit a valid email address to register. This would compromise anonymity, which I refuse to do.

I guess we'll just have to hope that a decent alternative either exists or springs up soon.

Sorry to hear that, but I don't blame you for not wanting to pay for hosting. Thanks for trying, though.

Based on a PM I received from pt100, I just signed up for The Movie DB (www.themoviedb.org) after considering several other options. It has been around since 2008 and has had individual TV series since 2013. I managed to find the Adventures of Superman section and posted a message there. (It's actually the first message in the forum!) They also have moderators, so that could be a good thing to keep things from getting out of hand.

Although the features aren't as glitzy as those here, at least they have pages and boards for individual movies and TV shows, instead of awkwardly having them only as threads thrown randomly into a larger movie or TV board. That's something that IMDb2 doesn't have, and I find it crucial to have it.

I hope to see you all there. I'm keeping my screen name and avatar so I'll be easy to recognize. 😃

Thanks for posting the info. Yeah, I got busy and just got around to posting here. I have now also transferred my username and avatar over there and will post something there later today.

I also hope to see a lot of the regulars here showing up there. The board is almost empty and could use some activity. The TV show could also use some good ratings and reviews, so it would be great if some of us could help improve its rating/reviews.

Yes, I'm so annoyed at imdb for dumping the boards that I've decided to go over to The Movie DB and use all its features, including giving reviews, etc. As far as I'm concerned, I don't need imdb any more.
