Was Wally a good friend?

I apologize for all of the questions but this is my first time to see the show even though I heard about it for years. Please bear with me.
Was Wally any kind of an actually good friend to Dave? I've seen 4 episodes with him in them, in 2 he was a good friend but in the other 2 he was quite lousy. Being so unkind as to embarrass David and ruin his chances with a girl. The other he stole Dave's story of making a hole in one in order to spend time with a young lady who was not his girlfriend. Thankfully I saw the two "nice" episodes first or I wouldn't have liked Wally a bit. Even using immaturity as reason for his behavior it doesn't excuse what he did either time.
On another note, I see why people on other boards complain about the shows running out of order. I hate that these on Netflix have the sons married in one episode and 14 years old the next. They even run the one about Dave's 17th birthday twice under a different name! I look forward to our cable company picking up one of the many retro channels now available. Even if they don't run in order it will be a delight to see more episodes!!
Many thanks to anyone who tries to help me with my inquiries.

I couldn't stand Wally. He was always sponging off Rick at the soda shop and often showed up at the Nelsons' just at mealtime. Ginger was supposed to be his girlfriend but that didn't stop him from going out with other girls. His constant wisecracking and stupid jokes would drive me crazy!

I couldn't stand Wally either; but I guess we all have a louse of a friend whom we tolerate and care about. I watched this show with my parents for many years when it was running as a series, until it was actually cancelled. Although they were older than me, I watched David and Ricky grow up right on TV. Brings back wonderful memories.

I haven't seen that much of him but what ep's i did view he seemed to me like a typical citcom "friend" around to getg main characters into difficulties. I thought he was good.

Apparently he did not work much post-Nelsons so maybe everyone else is correct in saying he wasn't liked. I thought he was an asset to the show in general.
