Did Ozzie have a job?

I don't recall it ever being mentioned what Ozzie did for a living?

reply

I believe he sold insurance - at least that's what I heard somewhere.

Ozzie’s exact job was never disclosed on the show. It was an intentional move to make the character more relateable. Though it is mentioned he use to have a band. In the film “Here Come The Nelson’s” Ozzie was in advertising.

ozzie said he didn't want to have a profession on the show so that a wider range of viewers could identify with him. he also noted that it would have tied his hands a bit to have to write for a "plumber" or "lawyer" each week. he really thought ahead. i got this, and a whole lot more from his bio "Ozzie".

Cool info, thanks for posting it.

The producers of the show Leave it to Beaver (LITB) took a similar tack with Ward Cleaver. They deliberately never said what Ward's job was in order to leave it generic.

However, they did show Ward at the office doing generic things that could apply to tons of jobs, like dictating notes, writing reports, attending meetings, criticizing those below him for sloppy work, etc. And they also did show Ward leaving home to go to work, and returning home from work.

I think the way how LITB handled the situation is better than the the way O&H did, because both ways accomplish the same goal, but with the LITB way, then the viewer understands where the Cleavers' income comes from...but not so for the Nelson's income as represented by the O&H way.

Hi,one can never be too rich or have too many friends. I used to think it was because harriet was an heiress and her and ozzie were living on the dividends,ya think?

reply

On the radio version of the series, it is made clear (at least on the episodes I heard) that Ozzie is a bandleader who plays alto sax/clarinet and Harriet is a part-time band singer. Also, I'm pretty sure that the radio "sons" are professional actors, not the real David and Ricky.

reply

Indeed the first four seasons of the radio show were voiced by professional actors for David and Ricky {1944-49).

reply

I've asked myself this question for years. I was told that Ozzie was a retired band leader. He obviously took early retirement.

reply

Ozzie's real life was reflected in his TV show. His real-life wife was his wife in the show, his real-life kids were the same kids in the show, the family home on the show was reportedly an exact replica of the Nelson's real home. Therefore Ozzie's 'job' was producer, writer and director of the 'Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet' in both real life and on the TV show.

reply

It would be so nice to be able to literally escape to a reality as portrayed on some of the old sitcoms. I'd be willing to sacrifice color vision during my stay.

Johnny Carson asked Rick Nelson what Ozzie did for a living on the show. Rick joked that Oz sold pornography out of the basement. Technically, there wasn't a basement...in today's episode, a kitten was under the house.

reply

We see the Nelson's basement in the episode "Closed Circuit" (S.6 Ep.25).

This question is always and only asked by people who didn't know, realize or remember that Ozzie Nelson had lead a very popular band for decades in real life. And since he is around the house all the time, he obviously doesn't have a job now.

So what's the big deal?

The big deal is that the show makes no sense because Ozzie & Harriet have a middle-class household income despite the fact that neither of them do any work to earn said income.

What Ozzie Nelson did for a living and whatever happened to the gas man that went into Jack Benny's cellar are two of the most unexplained mysteries of radio and tv comedies. In real life, Ozzie Nelson had a dance band with Harriet Hilliard as his vocalist. They appeared on the Red Skelton radio show where Harriet played "Mama" to Skelton's Mean Widdle Kid. Then they began their own radio show as "America's beloved young couple." The parts of David and Ricky were first done by child actors, with the real David and Ricky taking over in 1949. From there they went to TV.
