DVD release?

I would love to get a copy of this movie, but I've decided to not buy any more on VHS. Does anyone know if a DVD release is planned?

reply

I would love to find this on DVD also. One of my favorite movies and it is never on tv.

Searching for this on DVD has become nearly an obsession. I adore this movie, as does most of my family. We sit around quoting Ito while he's drunk talking about the play ("I'll pay de rent!" "My hero!") as well as numerous other bits from the production. My mother managed to get a VHS copy, but it was used when she purchased it, and is nearly worn out from repeated play. I will continue looking, but from everything I've found so far, it is not available on DVD.

P.S. Every once in a while, you can find it playing on TNT...which I believe is now called Spike TV. But it isn't very often.

This movie was just released today from Warner Brothers. Unfortunately, it isn't a widescreen version.

NTSC and not the PAL version that's been out a few years.

This movie wasn't made in widescreen. The correct aspect ratio is 1.37:1, as it is in the Warner Archive release.

It's been a while since you posted this but I thought I would let you know there is one copy...colorized...currently for bid on ebay.

I wonder why this movie isn't release on DVD yet along with the documentary short about this film. It's such a great movie about a journey of women moving out west and all the obstacles they faced and it's written by Frank Capra. You would think that it would be released by now.

Turner Classic Movies finally showed Westward the Women as part of a guest programmer marathon (The guest programmers were all celebrities, except for a contest winner who chose WTW!). The movie turns up periodically. You can request it, ask to be reminded when it'll run again, and of course check the TCM site for DVD availability as well. See the link below.

First rule of movie-going: never confuse the actor with his role.

Thank you very much. I have been thinking about a multi-region, multi-code DVD player. It seems there is ample reason to get one!

Contacted Warner Bros on their website with the following:

Description: Are there any plans to issue a DVD edition of the outstanding feature "Westward the Women"? This seems to be a topic of frustration on Amazon and other websites/forums.

Their response:

Thank you for your interest in Warner Bros!

Sorry, we do not have any published information regarding an upcoming release for this DVD at the moment. Most new movies and television shows are released onto DVD within a few months. For classic movies and TV shows, Warner Bros is releasing more and more of its vast catalog of film and television series each year, but we are not able to provide information on release plans for a specific title.
