Question About Ending *SPOILERS*

As I said in another comment, the print is dark and the main action sequence near the end happens at night in an unlit alley, so it was hard to follow the action.

I know that the Idingers were reunited in the back of a truck, presumably on its way to the American, British or French sector and safety. I know that Bill (Ralph Meeker) and Vassilij ended up as, if not exactly friends again, then at least not enemies anymore.

But did they know the Idingers had escaped? Or did only Bill know Karl and survived and been reunited with his wife? Or did neither of them know (although of course Bill would have found out later from his buddies). I couldn't see enough of the fight between them to tell who did what and who knew what.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the movie. The flashback sequence when Bill and Vassilij meet each other by the Elbe and realize the war is essentially over was funny and touching. I think that may be the happiest I have ever seen Ralph Meeker in any role he played. 😀
