Rare Burt Misfire

He still looks great and acts with strength, but the weak writing/directing/pacing with wimpy Robert Walker & Carleton Carpenter makes this a rather tepid affair. If you like watching Burt tho, still worth it as he's great in all his scenes - it just seems like he's in one movie and everyone else is in another. Burt always stands out, but the discontinuity between he and all the other production elements makes this a less-than a satisfying viewing experience.

Agreed. This isn't a great film, but it's a good story and the scenery is gorgeous. As a Burt Lancaster fan, I found this an enjoyable watch.

"Rare Burt Misfire"

j-z-o......I was going to take issue with you when I saw the title of this thread, but having read what you've written, I completely agree.

Vengeance Valley is pretty basic Western fare, and perhaps standard for its vintage.

I think this makes Lancaster's efforts even MORE meritorious, as I daren't even think how "tepid" it would be, without the great man.

Burt was given so little to work with. No great romance, no great intrigue or any real depth to the character he had to portray, For example he seemed entirely "unbroken" given his harsh childhood. A bit too much of a goody two shoes.

Something funny...Don Rickles meets Frank Sinatra on stage to present an Academy Award in 1969. Rickles' opening line, I was in back watching Burt Lancaster's chest move."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEg82RG_BIs

Lancaster, what an actor, WHAT A STAR!
