'Tales of Hoffmann' vs. 'Magic Flute'

How in the hell does this get a lower rating than Ingmar Bergman's complete botch of "The Magic Flute"? ("Tales of Hoffmann" is the best film version of an opera by far.)

reply

Simply because Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are not as well known as Ingmar Bergman. And even among their films, very few people respect The Tales of Hoffmann. I personally think it's one of their two best films alongside The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

Even the excellent dazzling Criterion print didn't generate much enthusiasm.

Well I'm just happy TCM is showing it....

I do note that some give these productions a 'one' on the rating scale, and it would seem that what one could call perhaps the 'masterpieces of civilization' just don't "cut it" for some people.

Hard to express perhaps, but on the other hand, I hope no one if 'forced' to watch productions that may have a specific audience in mind....
