Moira Shearer

I watched this a couple of months ago for the first time and I just rewatched "The Red Shoes" last night for I think the third time. I noticed that Moira Shearer looked much thinner in "The Tales of Hoffmann". I know she was a professional dancer, so I understand why she was so thin, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this as well. I was actually quite shocked by how skinny she was in the film, especially for an actress from this period.

It's not that she's particularly thin in ToH but that she's quite chubby in TRS, especially when we first see her

I think that's she far from chubby in "The Red Shoes", and significantly thinner than most actresses of the 1940s and 50s. I'd like to hear the words you use to describe actresses like Marilyn Monroe, or even Judy Garland or Deborah Kerr. And let me guess, you probably think Audrey Hepburn looks like she's at a healthy weight.
I'm not trying to sound rude or start an argument, but people's perceptions of how a woman should look are messed up these days.

I agree, I noticed the same thing. Her face was rounder in The Red Shoes but, except for her muscular thighs, she was incredibly thin. The only explanation I can think of is that maybe by her mid-twenties she lost the remainder of her baby fat?

She was a professional dancer, who occasionally made a film. Dancers of that era weren't under as much pressure as they are now to be as lean as possible, but they were still under pressure.

And she wasn't chubby in "The Red Shoes", she was slimmer than any actress of her era! She just wasn't as underweight as modern ballet dancers, who tend to be so lean they are at risk for a lot of health problems because of their weight.
