'Except maybe for a few spooks . . . .'?

Jeffrey Hunter says this (in regard to "everybody cheats") at about 54:30 into the movie (YouTube version).

Surely this can't be a racial reference (there are no blacks anywhere to be found in this movie, except early on as train porters).

Anybody know what he means by "spooks"?

I looked up "spook" in some dictionaries, and one of the meanings was "weird or eccentric". That's consistent with the "everybody cheats" premise.
