Film vs. the novel

Back in the 1970s, my mom and I would watch the movie whenever it showed up on our local channels old movie airings (pre-cable days), and found it funny and serious at the same time - it was a good popcorn movie for us back then. My dad would just groan and go to the den to read a book when we started to watch.
Fast forward to this century, and I discovered it was based on a novel by Peggy Goodin (thank you, IMDB!) I searched online and found the book on e-bay for pretty cheap, (book is out of print, I think). Anyway, the novel includes more in-depth on characters, especially for Liz and her family, other characters are in or changed from the movie version, and the plot has more grit to it. I won't reveal how the novel ends, but it was probably the 1950s era that had the movie change how some plot points resolve. It is a pretty good read if you have the chance to find a copy and compare to changes in the movie.
