'When the film was released in the United States in 1954...

I have never watched a better shot B&W film in my life, for sure.
Immortal performance by Maj-Britt Nilsson (Marie). How come everyone always gives his/her or its the best performance in Ingamr Bergman films?! (Its = Dog Gruff in this film)!
But couldn't believe my eyes when I read following statement in the trivia section of this film on IMDB, how could they do that? can you believe it?!!!

"When the film was released in the United States in 1954 its distributor spliced in unrelated scenes of bathing that were filmed at a nudist colony in Long Island."

Americans, Americans!!!

A couple things pop up in my mind:

1) If you've never seen a better shot B&W film, you need to see more B&W films :P Nothing personal, I mean, I'm a big fan of Bergie, but this wasn't even HIS best shot B&W films, and comparing it to stuff like Third Man, Psycho, or Citizen Kane...I dunno. Different strokes, I guess.

2) A very odd and amusing story, but your "Americans, Americans" quote is rather silly considering that Americans are among the MOST prudish with regards to on-sceen nudity and sexuality, and for back in 1954...frankly, any films being released in the States with nudity was so rare it was almost impossible, so I question the truth of IMDb's statement.

Well, perhaps the movie was reserved for "special" types of theaters that featured that kind of thing.
