The Story

I'll say this for Dickens, this has to be one of the best stories ever written. Look at all the different versions of it. I've seen it numerous times, and it has never really lost its impact. I hope Dickens was proud of himself for writing such a universally appealing story of redemption.

I agree. It's a brilliant story. And I don't know if Charles Dickens ever thought his book would be so popular and sell thousands of copies. And that it would be made into films and theater performances around the world all the way into the 21st century.
Quite remarkable really.
This film version is my favorite above all others. I just love Alastair Sim's performance.

Absolutely correct. He remains one of the true geniuses of English literature, and one of the few whose greatest popularity and success came during his lifetime. For that reason, it seems likely that he was not greatly surprised by the popular reception to "A Christmas Carol." But, I'm sure he would have been as astonished as any 19th-century novelist to know that his work would appear in electronic photoplays viewed by millions for centuries after his death.
