this is a pretty good film. Not fellini's best but deserves some recognition. Many comedians say this is one of the funniest films ever made. Orson welles said its his favorite fellini film. and in context to fellini's career, this was his first solo effort.

Anyone even seen it? its on criterion dvd

im about halfway into it and right now it looks like *beep* compared to his other work. Maybe the last half is the better?

Brunella Bova is gorgeousm, although to be honest I really didn't give a rat's ass about any of the characters in the film thus this film is really for Fellini completists only.

But it was Fellinis first solo directoral effort so you can't be too critical.
Also nice to see Fellini's wife Guileta Masina as the prostitue "Cabiria" who would later appear in her own film NIGHTS OF CABIRIA.

Too bad some people can't enjoy the talent of Alberto Sordi.

I think it's a pretty good movie - some scenes are really touching and there's a few places where I was laughing out loud.

The White Sheik perhaps is not the best film directed by Fellini but it's far from being a bad movie. Whoever says that has no taste in movies.

This is only the 2nd film by Fellini and his 1st "solo" effort (Variety Lights was co-directed with Alberto Lattuada).
It's one of the most accesible films by the italian maestro, and belongs to an era when Fellini was still polishing his style. Albeit some "absurdist" touches are already present.
Fellini The Neo-Realist first, and later Fellini the Surrealist (or better said "The Absurdist"), had to wait a few years more.

For me it was a pleasure to see Alberto Sordi, Leopoldo Trieste, Giulietta Masina when they were younger. Besides the movie was funny enough to me. It made me giggle quite a few times.
BTW Brunella Bovo was really cute and charming.

Not a masterpiece but much better than 90% of the commercial garbage produced at the time or nowadays.

7/10

I actually like this film too. I love the subtle jokes, "Cavoli?" "No, Cavalli"

Ivan being generous, paying an extra 100 lira for a bath...Lol. "Si, bagno caldo per la mia signora!"

Ivan being too discrete at the police station, worried it would end up in the papers.

I really found it hard not to hate any of the characters. The wife sneaking off to find the white sheik then climbing into a truck with them? claiming to be innocent and pure?
The newly wed husband already treating his wife like crap from the beginning of their honeymoon? Don't get me started on the White Sheik, I cringed every time that character was shown.

While I've enjoyed Fellini's earlier films, and don't get me wrong didn't dislike this.. I was pretty underwhelmed. I think people just like to rate everything Fellini 10/10.

I really enjoyed it, surely not Fellini's best but a fun little movie.
