What's up with this movie?

A few observations:

At the begining, Astaire & Powell just finished their last number of their show in New York. They then head off to their dressing rooms immediately. What, no curtain call or final bow to thank the audience? That's it, we are not comming out to thank you, Show's over, go home people!

The London show - They do a singing number of a New York couple with a few sight gags near the end. No laughs from the audience.

Astaire & Powell - What players! Astaire gets smitten with a British dancer at the casting call for the London show. She is picked. I'm sure the others want to put a dagger in her back because of the obvious favortism. Powell seemed to string along a ton of guys without getting serious with any of them. Three of them in New York are beating each other up while she could care less. I guess they served their purpose. Same goes for Lawford. That marriage ain't gonna last.

Hmmm...I'm guessing you have a tough time with the singing Dwarves in Snow White too, and darn, no one could really wear a glass slipper...suspend some disbelief and enjoy the show.

Did you miss the previous 'romance' on the streets????

Agree with the OP - the film's script is pretty lumpy. the numbers are
great; the play is hardly top-notch.

The story was always weak. If it weren't for Fred's amazing dancing on the ceiling and the notion of "young love" between Jane Powell and Peter Lawford, I think this movie would be less fondly remembered.

Seriously, I think Sarah Churchill is THE WORST dancing partner Fred ever had, bar none (even Joan Fontaine). And the whole premise of their relationship in the film is weak and totally devoid of any passion.

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

How cares about the script? Stunning work by Astaire and Powell. Love this film!

I agree with this. Astaire was in fine form. His solo dance numbers make this worth the watch alone. Powell is a good dance partner and their dance numbers are also quite enjoyable.

The floor! (to answer your question literally)
