an Awful attitude

One of the commenters on this film here on IMDB calls it "Awful", listing all that things missing from what HE believes should be a correct mix. I really hate this attitude! Obviously, one watches a film expecting to find some predefined content or comment or values, and when the film shows up to be different then it's the film that's bad! What an utterly, intensely stupid and ignorant way to aproach any work of art!
The River, in particular, is a film to be watched with fresh senses. It will be as beautiful as your senses will allow it to be.

Gentlemen, you can't FIGHT here, this is a War Room!

I so agree with you. There seems to be no end to the many IMDB commentators eager to show off their "superior" sensibilities and impress everyone with their oh-so-wonderfully sly and snarky digs at these musty old classic films. When I read their comments I usually feel the problem is that they don't bring enough to the table if they cannot appreciate anything at all about a film as superior as, say, "The River". Aspects of it may have dated, some acting may not be the most expressive but it is a beautiful and deeply felt work. I feel sorry for so many younger people who don't seem to be able to look at anything done before their time and see its charm or quality. You limit yourself terribly!
