This movie was amazing. I think its even better than The Rules of the Game (great movie, but it did not affect me emotionally as much as The River).

I don't understand what the hell people are compaining about. This film is very fine even if it's not what is expected from Renoir.

I think it was absolutely gorgeous..
Definately a classic movie in its own right.

I saw this film first in London at the National Gallery where they were screening films by artists. Renoir of course came from an exceptional background in art and The River demonstrates that aesthetic. What I find so marvelous is how the native culture is integrated into the story, the architecture, festivals and celebration of lights, the music, both in song and instrumentals, and the genre of India's folk. This perspective is so missing in today's very corporate-looking films spewn out of Hollywood. There is a charm and naturalness to the actors that is also missing. The River is indeed, a gem.
