Quick question to people who like this film...

Could you be anymore pretentious?

reply

Quick question to all idiots who like to write posts like these:
Could you be anymore intolerant and stupid?

reply

YES! I AM SO STUPID! Thats why I study film at one of Britain's best universities!
Anyway, thank you for providing me with an answer.

"That's why I study film at one of Britain's best universites"

Oh my... now you gave the proof to everybody that you're stupid.

What do you expect out of posting on a message board that people are pretentious if they have affection for this film? Do you know what pretentiousness is? And do you think studying film does give you a license for such lousy comments?

reply

So you think that film studies is not a genuine academic subject? Genius. I mean, what place does film have in modern culture?! You're quite right.
This film is for the pretentious only who believe that they have to like it just so they can use it as an ostentatious example of how intelligent they are or think they are. It is an appauling film, that have a go academics pick out as ''brilliant'' or ''moving'' because it is made to look that way. People who ''have an affection'' for this film watch it for the first time KNOWING that they will like it because they feel the need to force themselves to in order to maintain the pretense that they can appreciate cinema.
Anyone with a shred of sense would realise how utterly arsing dreadful The River is but because it has a small amount of action, focuses on some warped clash of cultures and has possibly the worst ''poetic'' narration ever. Idiots who watch it and think, yes, how thought provoking and insightful, are doing so just to reassure themselves of their own sense of refinement. Like people who claim to enjoy Cirque Du Soleil.
And the girl is ugly. Like, well ugly.

This is just one man's opinion

Omfg...

"So you think that film studies is not a genuine academic subject? Genius. I mean, what place does film have in modern culture?! You're quite right."

I think film studies has to be a genuine academic subject, but if "one of Britain's best universities" allows crapheads like you to study it we can really have genuine doubts about film's place in modern culture.

"This is just one man's opinion."

You can not summarize every stupid trash talk with "opinion". Your opinion is immersed in utmost pretentiousness of the worst kind imaginable, first of all your equaling of all "academics", of all people, of any kind of audience, summarizing the way the minds of all of them work by one awfully simplisctic prejudice. Do you guys in your university have a course on how to differentiate between what is an argument and what is only an utterly dull and embarassingly flat sort of claim? It doesn't take the slightest form of knowledge about films, about audiences, about people, about life, about language, aboug anything, to write those crappy sentences. "people are stupid if they like The River because The River is a stupid film designed for stupid people to like, because stupid people think that it's not stupid, that is why they're so stupid". Don't you realize that this is an embarassingly ridiculous tautology? Mere opinions are no basis for communication, and communication is the reason boards like these should exist. To communicate, you have to have perceptions, reflections and thought. But I'm afraid your university doesn't teach stuff like that.

I loved it because I could feel Jean Renoir's admiration and understanding of the Indian culture absolutely radiating off of it.

I thought the story was touching and the composition was extraordinary. The use of color was subtle and beautiful at the same time. The shots of the trees in bloom particularly were extremely aesthetic. I was also moved by Harriet's character and the stories and poems she wrote and the general outlook on life that Renoir provides with this film.

Also, Eddie Smith stop playing internet tough guy and grow up.

reply

Yeah, all the tough guys watch The River... This film really is poor. You can watch it and make yourself like it just for the self assurance that you can appreciate cinema OR you can show a genuine understanding and realise what a great effing heap of bumwash it is. You were moved by Harriet's poems?! The only thing they moved me to were a different room. Id rather watch The Rock or Pearl Harbour. That's The River's problem, not enough tits and explosions.

After your latest post I've decided you are one of two things:

1. Trolling

2. Actually Retarded

Either way, I'm done with this little game you're playing.

reply

THIS FILM IS BALLS! Seriously, it is, joking aside. After studying the bloody thing for a year it really is balls. I do hope you play bridge...

reply

dude just respect people's opinion. I could call you pretentious because I hate 2001. I could just say you like it because it is a highly regarded film BUT I am sure you love the film. Same with the people on this board with The River.

In saying that, for the people that like this film, is the acting terrible because I have heard mixed opinions on it. I plan to buy it in the near future regardless..

Cheers

Excellent troll topic. I see what you did. Complaining about people being pretentious and then proceeding to carry out one of the most pretentious threads on imdb.

Impressive.
