This was a good movie. But it could have been great.
It comes across like too many people had control of the final product.

The book is incredible, more than incredible, but what a poor translation to film! What makes the book so brilliant is the self-examination the soldier undertakes. That is humanity at its finest, to be able to examine your own actions, your thoughts and fears, to learn, to question.... When Audie murphy thinks hard about himself, it just looks like he's pooping.

I read the novel and saw the film back to back and I judge it an excellent translation of the novel. If I have a criticism, it is that the film was cut to the bone, especially leaving out the scene with the decaying soldier. Still, it works and the points of the novel come through. Murphy was excellent in the lead, in my judgement. As a matter of fact, I can't really think of anyone who would have been better.

i've seen the hour and 10 min cut and it's half great half frustrating. the scope and detail remind me of d.w. griffith stuff or buster keaton's "the general" but i hate the narration the studio tacked on and the score isn't so hot. if they'd just cut those out and add whatever scenes they took out i think it'd be a masterpiece. john huston's one of the greatest filmmakers that ever lived!

Yes it is a great film. Better than even Huston himself thought. I particularly like that it is visually 'bright'. It gives it an intensity that works well.

Paradise is exactly like where you are now, only much, much better.
