When Van's character is trying to cajole the elderly doctor to come out to assist, he reaches his hand out of the shadows to display something in his palm. This immediately seems to convince the doctor that the case is serious enough to merit immediate attention. What is is that he shows him? I couldn't see it clearly.

Ah! I had no idea! (I had wild theories in my head.) Well, that makes sense, except, as you imply, for the fact that a police department would automatically collect any quitting officer's badge, precisely so that he could never impersonate an officer in the future. Then again, with the character's amorality, maybe he could have managed to sneak out a badge, thinking it might be useful in the future.

shareSince I watched this off my DVR, I went back to look at the badge Webb was wearing on his uniform and the one he showed the doctor - they were completely different. So, Webb didn't keep his police department-issued badge, but got another one from somewhere else.
I know, at least as late as 1980, one could order a badge through a catalog that said just about anything you wanted it to say - totally customize it. And checking online now, I see for about $60, you still can.
