Unfortunately, everytime I saw Monty Clift, I kept seeing...

Montgomery Clift in this movie kept reminding me of Tom Cruise the whole time - if Cruise would actually let himself visually age a bit. Ruins the experience a bit, but there you go.

Montgomery Clift (<---what a Hollywood name) before I was really familiar with his work faintly reminded me of a cross between a young Dennis Hopper and/or an older, grown-up, Jerry Mathers (yes, "the Beaver").

And he kept reminding me of Daniel Day Lewis in his younger days a bit... Am I the only one?! lol.

I love Tom Cruise...I don't like him like I have a crush or anything like that, but I like his work. I know people really think he's a nutcase and all that, but I just really think he is 100 per cent sincere in what he says and does. I don't agree with the Scientologist way of thinking, but i can recall reading somewhere that they have to be good Samaritans and help out and all that, and how many times has he helped rescue someone or risked his life in some way? I guess I just like the guy.

Monty Clift is my favorite actor of all time, and I'm also a fan of Tom Cruise's films. In fact, I got drawn to Cruise because I saw a striking similarity in him to Monty. There's even a similarity in their body posture and build, that kind of slackened posture that Monty had. They both can have soft high voices at times, and obviously facial features like the nose and thick brows. I think it would be amazing if Tom played him in a biopic, but doubt it would ever happen.

The only similarities I saw to an actor today in dark brooding looks, voice and overall presence was Joaquin Phoenix. Cruise didn't cross my mind at all.

No one has ever reminded me of Clift until I saw Phoenix's performance in "The Master"-- he brings Clift back to life, no exaggeration. ("The Master" also contains a number of references/parallels/mirrored scenes to various Clift films, especially "From Here to Eternity" and "A Place in the Sun". I pointed some of them out here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1560747/board/thread/211679286)

I can certainly see the resemblance to Cruise, but Clift reminds me a lot more a Jake Gyllenhaal. There's just something similar in the way the two guys carry themselves, and they both have those striking blue eyes. Handsome bastards, those two.

I'm never alone; I'm alone all the time.

I watched it last night on TCM, and I saw Tom Cruise to, glad I am not the only one who noticed.

reply

It's funny, but I always felt that Cruise should have done a biopic of Clift at some point. At times they do look very much alike.

reply

Boy! Do I, as well. I am not familiar with any bio-pics on Montgomery that have been done, but if anyone ever does one, it MUST be Tom Cruise. He is a dead ringer for Clift, and if anyone else took a recast or played him, I would think really hard before I saw the film. I wonder if any "Hollywood insiders" have taken notice to this? - just pon the chance an opportunity arose. Anyway, I agre with you 100%!

reply

I also think that Montgomery Clift looks like Daniel Day-Lewis.
