"Are they watching us"

First off -- all the millennials and their ilk -- shouldn't criticize any movie unless they've seen the Best Oscar winners and nominees from the first 50 years.

You got to have a frame of reference before calling a masterpiece like this 'dumb'. It only makes you appear dumb.

You can't watch these movies with 21st century eyes are, of course, they're going to be slow and lacking special effects.

That said - I love this movie and the techniques Stevens does with the camera.

The one that always blows me away is when Liz and Monty are dancing, and they profess their love for each other.

The camera is tight on their face and suddenly Liz turns to the camera - looks directly into the camera - and says 'Are they watching us?"

It reveals the voyeuristic element of film - that we are peering in on their private lives and we can't help but to feel guilty, being caught staring.

Again, one has to remember the time period. Nothing like this was ever done before - shattering the fourth wall. Sure it was done in comedy, but never in a drama.

sheer brilliance.
