book LASSIE COME HOME

I have a question as to whether the original book by Eric Knight would now be considered outdated or not. See, I am taking a Children's Lit course this semester, and we have to intoduce a book to the class that we have not been assigned, nor have we read before. I did read the book once, but it was a while ago, so I don't really remember the book. However, I absolutely love this movie. I know a movie remake was made fairly recently, but I don't know if the book would still be one of those enduring classics that many people would still enjoy reading, or if a person reading it would get the feeling that this book is outdated. I'd appreciate any help anyone can lend.

i think it's a classic, much as the Laura Ingalls Wilder books are still very interesting to youngsters.

There's not much that resonates more universally with kids than that special relationship between a boy (or girl) and his dog. It's about loyalty, caring and responsibility and friendship. Those kids who have dogs love to hear about them, and a lot of kids w/o dogs certainly get stars in their eyes about them. Sure, some kids are no doubt less interested in outdoorsy stuff or animals these days - but I don't think that classic books about the frontier life and about something as constructive as the love of a good dog could ever be seen as out of date.

Just my 2 cents.
