John Wayne was 6'4" and built big. Can't imagine a guy that size trying to maneuver around inside a wwii sub!
shareI know the WWII subs were probably smaller than current ones. I've had a friend and a brother-in-law who both were in sub-service in the 80s & 90s. One is 6'6" and the other about 6'4", maybe 6'3". One is slender, but the other isn't a slender build (although he is no where near obese, just more of a football build than a runner). Neither complained about an especially tight fit.
shareDepends which class your pals served in - some of the subs in the 80's and 90's were the size of WWII heavy cruisers! The Gato class subs of WWII were 1525 tons (surfaced) - about half the size in all dimensions. They would have been a considerably tighter fit for the sailors of today.
