The Good Old Days....

...when cops could rough up a perp to the point of rupturing their bladder and only get a slap on the wrist.

...when perps were actually scared of the cops.

...when cops were called "the fuzz".

As for the latter, this must be one of the earliest films to have used the term "fuzz" for the police. Someone half whispers it when Ryan and his two partners enter the bar early in the film. I recall that term becoming much more prevalent in the late '60s, early '70s.

Re: Fuzz...yes, it was very popular in the 1960s. Whatever happened to the terms "Flat Foot"and "Gum Shoe"? Were they just terms used for the police in 1930's movies?

I very much doubt it. Fuzz has been American slang for police since the 20s at least. OED has an early cite of 1929 but I'm sure earlier will turn up. It's bound to have been used in some film or other of the 30s or 40s.

Yeah, it's been around for a very long time. Nobody uses it now though, do they? People just say "cops"?
