Incest? Someone explain.

I'm not too acquainted with quaint New Orleans customs, but Barbara's cousins were a little too close to her, including one who wanted to marry her.

Does someone have greater insight on this? Was marrying first or second cousins customary? I don't believe the film makes it clear whether Barbara's cousins were first or second, but I found it unusual.

I think back in the day, marrying distant cousins were acceptable even promoted because it kept money in the family.

But it was implied in one scene that he had tried to rape her or that they had fooled around and she called him detestable. I don't think we were supposed to like him.

Truth be told, I had to see you one more time, even if it was from a distance.
