white wine and beer???

is it some hollywood screenwriter fantasy or a real new orleans old custom? doesn't seem to be a great mix

I don't know which of those it is, but certainly the character who orders the combination thinks it's a real N.O. custom and assumes that those who see him order it think so, too, since he says privately that he actually hates the combination.

I lived in New Orleans for several years in the 1970s and I never heard of such a thing. I think it came out of the screenwriter's imagination as something to identify Crawford's character as coming from N.O.

I haven't drank alcohol for many years, but the idea of chasing one with the other seems disgusting. One is kind of sweet and the other tart. If there was such a combination down in LA my guess it would have came from the Cajuns who are decendants or the French who have a long history of wine drinking......How the idea of mixing the two came about is anyone's guess. Prior to water purification though both ale and wine were drunk because they were far safer then local water so my guess something like that started it......But Craford not only seemed to have any Cajun, but for a LA resident he sure sounded like a NY tough
