Scenes filmed at Marion Davies Beach House

Scenes at the end of this movie, supposed to be at a La Jolla Hotel, were actually filmed at the spectacular mansion Hearst built for Davies on Santa Monica Beach. The house was built in 1927 for $7 million dollars and was the scene of lavish Hollywood parties until the outbreak WWII. The house had antique carved panelling, ceilings and chandeliers brought over from Europe. There was a distinctive ocean front pool decorated with Italian mosaic tiles.

During the war, the beachfront home wasn't used because of the threat of invasion. After the war it was sold for about $750,000 and used as a hotel until the early 1960s when it was torn down.

This film has scenes filmed out by the pool, the distinctive mosaics are quite visible. This is followed by interiors which were filmed in some of the original drawing rooms. Carved panelling and huge chandeliers are prominently shown. You can tell these aren't sets because they also show the elaborate molded plaster ceilings. Movie sets almost never show ceilings and if they do, they are never ornate.

The house is gone but the pool remains intact, as it was, and is now part of the Annenburg Beach center in Santa Monica.

Thanks so much for the info. I thought it might have been the Colonial or the La Valencia in La Jolla. Too bad it's gone now. Thanks again for your wonderful post!
