Since this great film was never released on video, I don't suppose there's much chance of a DVD release. This is one of my favourite comedies, with a perfect performance by Thelma Ritter. I hope whoever owns the rights to this film at least considers it!!!
I agree. I taped it when it was on AMC yeras ago. Thelma is excellent as usual. She was nominated for best supporting actress, if the Academy had a musical/comedy category she would have won.
It's a shame the film isn't better known these days. It really hasn't dated much the way some comedies of that period have. And of course, the Ritter performance stands the test of time!
I agree! My parents taped it off of TV years and years ago. Part of the movie was messed up when some one hit record while watching it. I know they have looked for a professional copy off and on for quite a while. I would love to get this movie on DVD.
I smoked a DVD of this off of TCM. Is it me or does TCM PURPOSELY cause digital delay & pixalation during showings just to screw up the recording of a movie? Weather sometimes causes pixalation during transmission but the sky was clear this time around. Not only that, but I've also seen too often where the sound track is not synced with the video and all of a sudden there is a audio pop and bingo; back to normal. Cable prices keep going up and the service keeps going down!
Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Could it possibly be your burner? I was making dvd copies of old Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes I taped on vhs and notcied towards the end of some of the discs, it would freeze for a second or 2 on the burned dvd when I played it back. There is no way a crisp freeze frame came from the original vhs because they couldn't do that. My burner is 2 years old and records stuff on almost a daily basis, and has started acting strangely. I also get mixed results with cheaper blank dvds. I REALLY do hate when something good comes on late at night (usually sundays) and I get that dumb Emergency Broadcast System test during the movie! I mean c'mon... in this day and age after 9/11 and Katrina.. All the stupid tests in the world don't make a difference in preparing us for a true emergency! That system is over 40 years old, right?
Not my burner. I see this all the time just with regular viewing. I'm not even talking about playback here. I really think TMC is *beep* with us! And you're right, those Emergency Broadcasts screwup more movies. By the time I have seen a real broadcast in motion, the tornado or whatever has already past me by.

Thanks 3BP. I'll 'Take Another Whack At It':) I'm a big fan of Gene Tierney; had to watch "Laura" the other day. The store DVD has a bio on Gene. What a sad, tough life she lived.

This is a great movie. If it comes to DVD, I intend to get it for two reasons. First, Thelma Ritter. She was superb as always, and secondly, Bess was an extra as a wedding guest.
Thelma Ritter was great in this movie as she was in "Move Over, Darling" & "Rear Window". Now that's what I call a diversified cluster of film. Very versatile actor, that Thelma!

I first saw Thelma Ritter in Rear Window. She was great in All About Eve also. Has anyone seen her last film, What's So Bad About Feeling Good? From what I read on IMDB it looks very interesting!
Hey Jacques, As a suggestion, buy a DVD Recorder and that way you could burn your own DVD's and have the movies in a very unique way.Burning your own DVD's is the best way to go.Then go to TCM.com and request that they play the movie again and then proceed to copy them when they come on the air. Sincerely, Frank.
Hi, I got one just after Christmas, and have recorded it. We just got TCM in my part of Canada a couple of months ago. I'm getting caught up on lots of films!
Hi Jacques.Do you have FMC there in Canada? If you do,you have the best of both worlds (so to speak) in regards to smoking prints onto DVD's.Make requests periodically with TCM and FMC (Fox Movie Channel)asking that they would regard the movies that you would like to view. From there procede to smoke them as they are being viewed.Too bad that many movies are lost forever. If you are looking for hard-to-finds try www.reelclassics.com.Go to merchandise then to videos&DVD's then to rare dealers. That applies to everyone else that reads this.Take care.
This was released on VHS and Laserdisc, so there is hope. Also if you go onTCM you can vote for it to go to DVD. The Studios do listen. Gene and Thelma are amazing.
Sorry, THE MATING SEASON was never released on either VHS or laser. I was hoping it might be one of the Paramount titles leased to Criterion for them to put out on DVD (along with things like IF..., ACE IN THE HOLE and ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS). It seems a likely possibility since Paramount for some reason has never seen fit to release it in any form. But there's no information on this one way or another as of this date, and the odds have to be against it, especially as Paramount itself seems to have slowed up on releasing older titles from its library.
There has never been any official release of The Mating Season in any home video format (VHS, DVD or Laser) -- that is, from Paramount, which owns the rights -- and no catalogue lists it on home video in any form. Who put out the version you have?
