IN defense of Charlie Price

The women that Charley "romanced" for their money and swindled were wealthy because they themselves had married their late husbands for money. They were goldiggers themselves and no better than Charley.

He didn't leave them broke, he romanced them and took a fraction of what money they had. They on the other hand took ALL of the money that their husbands had. So proportionately he was quite fair, and money that he took was money that the women didn't work for themselves.

That was Charlie's story, which, given the nature of the business he was in, we'd be well-advised to take with a large grain of salt.

In any case, the movie's a comedy (or attempts to be), so I wouldn't get hung up on the past designs and motives of the women Charlie courted.

I don't think Charlie ever called them gold diggers, nor implied they married their late husbands for money. He just said that the men had made the money and the women inherited it.
