Meaning of the Title

What are the Forbidden Games?

reply

The main (child) actors in the movie were burying a dead animal with all the rituals of a funeral. In the old days, plsying funerals was considered a blasphemy and strictly forbidden by adults. Hence, "Forbidden Games".

reply

Everybody in the film was playing a forbidden game to cope with the destruction of war.

reply

I'm totally agree whit hydro

reply

The kids are lying, grave robbing and killing small beings
Adults are frolickers and deserters

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

reply

I think "forbidden games" are what the children did in the cemetery.
It's not nice to steal and because of that it's forbidden.
For the children it was just a game. Forbidden game.

You alsomhave to remember that titles often get lost in translation. Interdits doesn't literally mean forbidden. It's more vague than that--just something you're not supposed to do in general. But translators have to pick what they think sounds best. That's why the title sounds kind of funny, at least to me.

I will just say this. I remember this expression: STATIONNEMENT INTERDIT

This means "if you park here, bad things will happen to you, your car, your grandparents, and even your dog. So DON'T DO IT." I would suggest that as a pretty close match for "forbidden."

But the forbidden games mentioned in this title are the ones the big people play that cause little kids to be orphaned and to do weird things like cross-robbing, etc. It's a title to maybe make you aware that on many levels in the world there are many more forbidden games going on daily of a much more serious nature than the less dire games being played by the two kids.

Nazis and others were playing really forbidden games which made the children ape this behavior in a strange, but very understandable way.

The ending? Abrupt? Huh? This is a movie about life, not about games. Or didn't you get that? In that respect, it's brilliant.

If they had put a happy ending on it, I'd have recorded it, and watched it again after CHOPPING that happy ending off. The abrupt ending (even if it wasn't intended to be that abrupt) gave the movie a lot of PUNCH that it might otherwise have lost.

A better translation would be prohibited games
