SPOILERS

Mr. Standish sees all, knows all, since he has immersed himself in the family history and correspondence. Yet he knows nothing of Helen. I expected there would be some plausible reason adduced to explain that. Nothing. She does have some unusual insights, but they were not developed plot wise. When the lightning conveniently strikes, he goes back to the future and finds her name listed on the family tombstone. How had he missed that? Who is Martha?

Martha was Roger's sister, whom Roger was trying to get Peter together with before he went back in time.

I must have missed that, but I don't think Peter and Martha had ever met before.

That is true. Roger had been trying to fix Peter up with Martha, but Peter was too preoccupied with the 18th century. At the end of course, it appears that Peter and Martha will get together and get married and live a good life.
