Questions about plot (spoilers)

I saw this movie recently and there were two things I didn't completely understand. What was the point in Alan killing the aunt only a few days after posting the cable to Victoria. What difference woould it make if he had just sent it after she killed her? Maybe I lost something there I can't remember. The other thing is, why did the nanny or housekeeper have the scrapbook with all the aunt's photos in her room? At the beginning I almost thought they were related or something, but other than for Victoria to find out the truth about the aunt's death why would she be keeping that lockable scrapbook on her bedside table?

how could he send a cable saying she died, before she actually died?

Yeah, the cable issue was definitely a mistake on his part. I think that the nanny got the scrapbook because that aunt trusted her. Remember what Alan said...his aunt picked her out of about 50 applicants. The aunt probably treated her like a niece.

sorry to be so late in replying but have only just seen the film.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

The point about the telegram date is that he knew she was going to die because he was going to kill her as soon as he knew that the child's mother was alive,so the date of the telegram confirms her suspicions of Alan

Many times great films have oddities in them that are inexplicable. I come across these all the time.

Good point! The answer is plot point. If he had sent it to her after then Karin/Victoria never would have guessed he killed her.

Another good question. The simple answer is again, plot point, but an argument could be made that Margaret felt some guilt and that she saved it since the Aunt was Chris' only family left, or so she thought.
