Fantastic

Can't believe I'm the first post. This is a great movie that really makes you think and feel.

For some reasons I'm quite sure there was a couple of messages around here last year. People were searching for a DVD of the film. Now it came out...

I agree, this is a superb film. And there's also an excellent documentary about the play on the Criterion DVD. Kind of makes me wish I had seen the play before the movie.

Yup, this is an undiscovered jewel of classic swedish cinema. It's much better than movies Bergman was making in that period. Unfortunately, many people think only Bergman's movies are still worth watching, while Alf Sjoberg is largely forgotten today.

I was pleasantly surprised

Its a strong version of the play by Alf Sjoberg, who gets fine performances by all the actors, especially I feel by Julie's father and mother, the Count and Countess, and by Marta Dorff as Katrin. But what really impressed me was the superb cinematography and elegant settings and compositions; the production was superbly done.

So glad that TCM presents these older European films. Recently saw the most recent version with Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell, transposed to Ireland, directed by Liv Ullmann no less and found it dismal. This version however made me do a total reversal. Excellent indeed and had the back story, missing in the most recent version, that made sense of the whole story. I am curious to see the 1999 version with Saffron Burrows and Peter Mullan and see how that one stacks up.

I hate this movie. Now I just watched Torment and I hate that too. What's up with these Swedish movies? They seem self-important but pointless.

I think a lot of these movies are made for and about highly emotional, dramatic people. Perhaps that’s why I don’t get them; I’m not in that demographic. Thank goodness!
